Chapter 3

That evening, Emma came home, tired and ready to lay down in her bed. She checked her voice-mails and there was only one from Fox so she listened to it but the woman speaking was Miyia and not Fox.

'Good day Miss Emma. If you could, I'd like you to meet with me tomorrow afternoon in the park. I have some things I'd like to discuss with you. Thank you.'

Emma didn't understand why Miyia would want to talk with her, but she had no reason not to meet with her, though she wondered if she did something wrong or maybe she offended the woman in some way that she hadn't realized. So the next afternoon, she took off from work to go and meet with Miyia. The maid was dressed in casual clothing and already waiting for Emma when she arrived.

“Hello Miyia,” Emma said with a smile.

“Yes hello. Listen Miss Emma, I have a favor to ask of you. No, I suppose I shouldn't say favor. It's an order.”

“What is it?”

“I'd like you to stay away from Miss Riley,” Miyia said with total seriousness. “She's been neglecting her work ever since you came around and I fear she will lose her position because of it.”

Emma looked shocked. “What?! Why would my presence be affecting Riley?!”

Miyia frowned. “You're just as airheaded as I believed you were. Well, I won't disclose why but maybe if you think about it, you'll realize it on your own. But then, you won't be able to do anything about it.”

“What are you talking about, Miyia? You aren't making any sense.”

“Just stay away from Miss Riley!” Miyia said angrily. “She doesn't need to be led on by you anymore.”

Without another word, Miyia left Emma there, confused by her words. Emma didn't want to go back home so she decided to visit Lily at High Rise since it wasn't open yet.

Always in early to clean the glasses and refill the booze, Lily stood behind the counter washing the glasses on the shelves. There was a knock on the doors and she went to see who it was, thinking it was probably another person wanting free booze but instead found Emma standing there.

“Emma, hello there.” She searched Emma's face and frowned. “You seem...upset.”

“You helped Riley when she had problems... Will you listen to me too?”

Lily smiled gently. “Sure, tell me what's the matter.”

The two went inside and Emma sat down at the bar while Lily got her a glass of ice water, listening to her as she spoke. She told her about Miyia's words, about how she was supposedly making Fox neglect her work and Miyia said she was leading Fox on. After she finished, Lily nodded her head.

“I really wish Ri had told you herself instead of me having to tell you this way, to be honest...” she said with a sigh.

“Lily, what are you talking about?”

“Ever since you and Ri were kids, she's...well, she's had a thing for you.”

“A...thing?”

Lily raised an eyebrow. “Emma, come on. You've dated
